Bluey Claims Top Spot in 2026 Streaming Race

According to Nielsen data reported by MovieWeb, Bluey has become the biggest acquired streaming series of 2026 so far, amassing 22.81 billion viewing minutes on Disney+. The Australian preschool show finished second overall behind only the final season of Stranger Things, which drew 23.26 billion minutes-boosted by a record 8.65 billion-minute finale week.

The Quiet Dominance of Everyday Viewing

Bluey's performance stands out for its consistency rather than event-driven spikes. While Stranger Things benefited from a decade of buildup and a climactic ending, Bluey achieved near-parity through sustained daily viewership. The gap between the two shows-just 450 million minutes-has led industry observers to speculate that Bluey could finish 2026 as the year's most-streamed series overall, especially with no comparable tentpole releases scheduled for the latter half of the year.

Disney's Licensed Hit

Though Bluey streams on Disney+ in the U.S., the platform doesn't own the series. Produced by Australia's Ludo Studio for ABC and BBC Studios, the show operates under a licensing agreement. Disney does hold global rights to the upcoming Bluey CG-animated film, set for release on August 6, 2027, with creator Joe Brumm writing and directing.

Acquired Content Outperforms Originals

Nielsen's data reveals the enduring appeal of licensed content. Grey's Anatomy placed second among acquired shows with 20.41 billion minutes across Hulu and Netflix, followed closely by The Big Bang Theory at 20.40 billion on HBO Max. The top five acquired series collectively generated approximately 108 billion minutes-5 billion more than the same period in 2025. This contrasts sharply with Disney+'s performance: despite Bluey's success, the platform placed no titles in the overall Top 20, where Netflix claimed 11 spots.

The Pitt and Streaming's Shifting Landscape

HBO Max's The Pitt demonstrated the potential of prestige originals, ranking third overall with 21.12 billion minutes from just 30 episodes. This highlights the bifurcation in streaming success-between reliable library content and breakout new series-with Bluey occupying a rare middle ground as a licensed property with original-series-level engagement.

What Comes Next for Bluey

With the Bluey film still a year away, Disney+ will likely continue leveraging the series' steady viewership. Parents and educators can expect sustained cultural relevance for the Heeler family, while industry analysts will watch whether the show can maintain its pace through year-end-potentially dethroning Stranger Things as 2026's streaming champion.
